We're wrapping up October and, with that, come festivals, parties and other autumn activities. Let's bring in the season using art journals!

What do you celebrate each fall? Do you throw parties, or attend them? What are your fall traditions? Are there rituals you enjoy during fall? Do you enjoy trips to orchards and venturing through corn mazes?

Autumn has a gorgeous color palette to begin with, so art journal opportunities abound; not only in the many graphics and interesting texts found in current magazines, but also in what's surrounding us all. How do fall colour and festvities relate to art journals?

This art journal prompt focuses on the inspiration drawn from the activities of fall. Embrace and bring in the season by collecting:

  • magazine clippings and cut-outs of favorite fall activities, festivals, traditions and rituals
  • fall-colored craft or construction paper
  • interesting text (stickers, magazines, stencils, scrapbook lettering, and so on) depicting fall themes and colors
  • recipes linked to favorite fall activities, festivals, traditions and rituals
  • paint colors depicting fall colors (don't forget gold!)
  • black and brown sharpies
  • brochures, announcements and community calendar pages found depicting what's happening where and when during the fall monthsSet out all of the supplies collected on to the work surface surround the art journal being manipulated. Ask questions about why these materials were chosen, what memories are associated with what was chosen and what these materials mean to you.Assemble one page spread at a time and be sure to allow each spread to dry completely before moving on to the next. Consider washing over the pages with brown watercolor or loose acrylic. Another option, which produces very good results, is tea-staining the pages before adding collages and text. When assembling the pages, be sure to leave plenty of room for text journaling. An option to consider is adding folded elements that can be opened to reveal text. That way, when the page spread is viewed, it can be either a pure visual presentation or one with text included.More ideas:
  • collect leaves to either attach to the page or create a leaf-rubbing background for pages
  • collect pieces of bark to create interesting textured backgrounds with
  • photograph fall elements or activities to use as embellishments or in a scrapbook layout manner
  • dehydrate and shellac apple slices to affix to pagesAlso, don't forget to incorporate other embellishments such as small handmade envelopes, brads, eyelets, altered tags and buttons! There's a lot of opportunity to add a bit of sparkle to pages where dark colors are overwhelming the page spread through use of these embellishments. The last thing to remember is that this is your book. This is your journal to do with as you wish, so don't let your inner critic rule over the choices made for each page spread. Be creative and start collecting what represents this season for you!
