Scrapbooking or Art Journaling?Creative Tips for Artists - Experiment With Scrapbooking Techniques!
Mixed-media artists do not only have to focus on handmade books or fancy art books when creating their pieces. Here is a fun alternative!
Art journals, art books, sketchbooks, and blank journals have been the customary books of choice for mixed media artists for as long as mixed media art has been around. It is fun to alter them, create drawings in them, and work on other projects within the pages of these books. What if you are the type who would like to use a different kind of book when working on these projects, though? The beauty of being a mixed media artist is that there are no solid rules for creation. This may be why so many artists are drawn to this form of creativity. Anything you choose can be your canvas. In this case, we are going to talk about how to use a standard scrapbook as an art book. Traditionally, scrapbooks are used to preserve memories through use of photography, embellishments, and journaling. The embellishments available to scrapbookers are so plentiful it is hard to resist not perusing them for use in mixed media art projects. So, why not let your imagination go wild and have some fun? You will find everything from stickers, to game pieces, to charms, and everything in between. Use of mixed media art techniques can be very successfully executed in a scrapbook. The paper quality is very good and can withstand heavy manipulation, not to mention the covers are already designed for altering. In some cases, mixed media artists have used walnut inks and watercolor paints to alter the covers and create a very interesting and unique look. Scrapbooks also come in a very wide range of sizes, in addition to their vast array of color choices. If you prefer working small, there is a scrapbook out there that is just right for you. It is not necessary to focus only on scrapbook stores, either. Artists can shop their local big box store and find suitable selections in the craft and hobby department. So, if you are in a position where you do not have access to a variety of art book choices, there is no limit to what you can create in the pages of a scrapbook. Do not forget there is a lot of spiral bound styles, as well, which is perfect for the mixed media artist who enjoys creating heavy, bulky and chunky layers. Do not let the fact that this is a scrapbook limit your ideas. Treat this book as any other art book you are working in and you will be pleased with the results. If possible, pick up more than one size and let the experiments begin!
